The famous Hillbillies Easter Egg Run

Annual charity run to Crosshouse Hospital Children's Unit

Every year since 2003 Hillbillies MCC have organised the Easter Egg Run from Mauchline to Crosshouse Hospital. Shortly before Easter we hold a rock night in Mauchline with a live band or two. Money is raised at that dance and donations are also made by riders taking part in the run.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed and helped to support our Easter Egg Runs over the years!

Please join us at our next Easter Egg Run. We meet at 12 noon on Easter Saturday close to Mauchline Primary School on Sorn Road (B743), Mauchline, Ayrshire, KA5 6AN. Please check Facebook for the latest arrangements or contact us.

Our run is timed to avoid clashing with the Yorkhill Easter Egg Run (YEER) to Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Sick Children which is traditionally on Easter Sunday. We know that many riders attend both runs and we're very grateful for everyone's support.

From 2016 we have also organised a separate Renfrewshire Easter Egg Run from Greenock to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley. This takes place a week or two prior to Easter weekend. Again, check with us for the latest arrangements.

In the mid-1990s local Ayrshire bike club Loudoun MCC from Darvel started an Easter Egg Run to the Children's Unit of Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock. One of Loudoun's members had personal experience of the care provided by the children's ward and the club agreed to help support the staff and patients.

Hillbillies MCC supported the Ayrshire Easter Egg Run from 2003, in the early days of the club. Soon afterwards we took the lead in organising the run each year with support from many other local bike clubs.

Since then it has grown into a major event in the biking calendar. In addition to the main run to Crosshouse Hospital, we've also visited other charties including Malcom Sargent House (now CLIC Sargent) in Prestwick.

The record was set in 2015 with 241 bikes & trikes. That year alone, £2,500 was given to the hospital. This inlcuded over £1,200 that was donated by riders on the day. A great effort by everyone invloved and really appreciated!

In 2016, despite the wet and windy weather, Easter Saturday still saw 115 bikes and, with the combination of funds raised throughout the year and the buckets on the day, we were still able to donate £2,000 to Crosshouse Hospital. In addition to this, the new, separate run to the Royal Alexandra Hospital a week earlier raised £512 for the children's unit there.

Unfortunately, because of their illnesses, many of the children are not allowed to eat chocolate. So, in addition to delivering Easter eggs, we also pass on donations of money from our fundraising activities. These are gratefully received by Crosshouse Hospital who use the money to buy additional equipment and toys for the children.

After visiting Crosshouse Hospital, the run often carries on to deliver donations to other organisations. Over the years these have included CLIC Sargent, the Combat Stress centre at Hollybush House near Ayr and support for the 'Charity Bikefest' events run in aid of the breast cancer charities, Breast Way Round and MacMillan Cancer Support.

Hillbillies MCC are very grateful to all the other bike clubs and individual bikers who join us. This support helps us to significantly increase the donations we make and, of course, the kids love to see the parade of bikes arriving and leaving!
